Midnight Madness

This year, the 'Round Midnight section does not promote any particular theme or time period. Instead, it focuses on the most interesting and most original works of contemporary genre cinema. You will watch the latest productions that captured the attention of the audiences at renowned film festivals around the world. Besides being a source of great fun, these flicks break genre clichés and expand the boundaries of onscreen entertainment.

Probably the biggest hit of this year's program is Tokyo Tribe, a gangster rap-musical directed by the enfantterrible of Japanese genre cinema, Shion Sono. This one-night epic battle of rhymes, fists, and gilded guns fought under the neon lights of Tokyo, will satisfy even the most demanding fans of the WTF Japan genre. Fans of surreal humor will love Liza, the Fox-Fairy, a black comedy and feature debut by Hungarian director Károly Ujj Mészáros. Liza is an Amélie-inspired twisted tale full of grotesque characters and fanciful retro sets. It encapsulates gallows charm of Delicatessen andthe formal precision of Moonrise Kingdom. Besides Mészáros's movie, there are two more feature debuts worthy to be mentioned. The first one, The Corpse of Anna Fritz is a macabre revolving around a theme well known to fans of Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her. The second flick entitled He Never Died is a Canadian blend of horror and family drama, with a brilliant leading performance from a punk rock legend Henry Rollins.

Adventurados featured in this year's 'Round Midnight is a bro road trip through space that has its foundation in 70s analogue sci-fi movies like DarkStar. The director Berton Pierce, who happens to be an experienced model-maker and analogue special effects technician, has gathered a group of prominent artists from the industry to create a visually stunning parallel universe without use of computers. A series of solid feature films that pay homage to the classics includes the Canadian giallo horror The Editor, and a preposterous slasher pastiche The Town That Dreaded Sundown. We also have a real treat for the fans of B-movies who grew up in the golden era of VHS. Mark Hartley, a good pal to the New Horizons audiences (Not Quite Hollywood was screened at the 12th T-Mobile New Horizons IFF), returns in triumph with his latest flick, a documentary on the cult film studio Cannon Films entitled Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films. It is a glimpse into the B-movie empire of Menahem Golan and Yoran Globus, a highly explosive mixture of the most absurd video clips and the weirdest anecdotes that should have taken pride of place on the shelf of any video rental store.

To cut a long story short, this year's 'Round Midnight is about monsters, lasers, explosions, immortal cannibals, samurai tank men, cosmic wilderness, and killer pumpkins. That's all you need to let your mind rest after a long day of intellectual pursuits.
